Federal immigration authorities confirmed that a man killed after getting into a Sunday shootout with San Antonio police had entered the United States unlawfully less than a year ago.

Jorge Jose Chacon-Gutierrez allegedly exchanged fire with three San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officers early Sunday morning inside an apartment home after the officers arrived in response to a domestic violence call, according to KSAT, a local outlet. The shootout left Chacon-Gutierrez dead and one officer, Viviana Rodriguez, hospitalized.

“On Nov. 15, 2023, Jorge Jose Chacon-Gutierrez, 26, from Venezuela, entered the United States near Eagle Pass, Texas, without inspection, admission, and or parole by an immigration officer,” an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson told the Daily Caller New Foundation.

“On that same day, he was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) who later placed him in removal proceedings after issuing him a Notice to Appear which obligated him to present himself before an immigration judge at a later date,” the ICE statement continued.

When SAPD officers arrived at the residence, they were informed that a female victim had been assaulted by her boyfriend, San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus said of the incident, according to KSAT. Once officers entered the apartment, Chacon-Guiterrez was lying in bed next to a rifle.

When he began shooting at the SAPD officers, they returned first as they exited the apartment, according to San Antonio Express-News. Chacon-Guiterrez’s death was listed as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

Border Patrol agents have encountered more than seven million migrants illegally crossing into the U.S. since the beginning of the Biden-Harris administration, according to the latest Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data. During this time period, more than half a million of these illegal crossings have been by Venezuelan nationals.

The deadly shooting comes as illegal migrant crime has increasingly attracted national media attention amid the ongoing U.S.-Mexico border crisis.

“The officer injured is in the hospital, awaiting further medical care,” an SAPD statement said of Rodriguez, according to KSAT. “The officer is in good spirits but has a long road to recovery ahead of her.”
