On Thursday, the Trump Administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit against the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago over its “sanctuary” laws defying federal immigration authorities.

As Just The News reports, the DOJ sued Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-Ill.) and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D-Ill.), among other Democratic officials in the state. The suit states that the “sanctuary” laws in Illinois, and particularly Chicago, are deliberately “designed to and in fact interfere with and discriminate against the Federal Government’s enforcement of federal immigration law in violation of the Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution.”

The lawsuit comes shortly after Attorney General Pam Bondi announced a freeze on all federal funding for sanctuary localities, amidst reviews of such policies and possible enforcement measures that can be enacted.

Several top Trump Administration officials, including Border Czar Tom Homan, have vowed a swift crackdown on cities and states that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials in their efforts to deport illegal aliens. Several of the largest cities in America have declared themselves to be sanctuary cities, including New York City, Boston, and San Diego.

President Trump has signed numerous executive orders implementing his strict immigration agenda, including declaring a national emergency on the southern border, ending the practice of “catch and release,” reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, and ending birthright citizenship.
